dear david,

not that I know anything about quantative research, perhaps you do?  I want to know about what is around when we write.  Are we sitting at desks (demographically speaking), drinking, smoking, are we watching TV?

Are we wearing pyjamas?

Do we do it first in word, and play a re-run special for the board, or do we just stick-it-in as we find it?

Perhaps a pencil?

Me?

I am drinking scotch, smoking (just what is acceptable) and wearing a sweater that I have been meaning to wash for at least 2 months, it kinda grazes my elbows.

Are we apples ,or the rest of the world. ( I am ambidextrous)

Are we morning or night?

can you hear kids complaining, adults perhaps?

s'up man ( and women), s'up?

I would love a survey, add it to the statistical gumph that reminds me to recycle.

you know sylvia did it looking at cows in the lane and betjeman on the train going home.

Where do you do yours?

I awake from sleep sometimes before dawn with a thought a jingle a memory... scramble to find the light, a pen and a scrap of paper to write it down before I forget. Many times I just stub my toe on the end of the bed and just fall to the floor in agony.

that is beautiful, a whole lot more evolved than groping for a pencil and finding a half known person...

Boy oh boy do I have a number of stimulants and means to writing a few rambly bits and pieces.

My fav. has to be my old battered typewriter which I inherited from Grandad. It's really old now and for some reason I always fail at inserting a new ink ribbon, but there is something incredibly soothing in the way it sounds as you type away. It also makes me feel like Dylan in the mid sixties touring Highway 61 and writing Blonde on Blonde.

I do have a laptop as well which is part of the process though I normally alter anything I've written completely. Then my iPhone for when I'm on the bus or from the early days of writing when I used to write something in the back of my T.S Eliot collection.

Normally on most writing excursions I'd have a coffee and some cheesecake and if at all possible something to smoke.

Oh and I do occassionally wake up with an idea and have to scribble it down before turning over again.

Well I think that's everything covered

I tend to write in pen.....am ancient, you know.  Plus I don't trust computers, too many have crashed on me.....so I rely on pen and paper, and after perfecting transfer to word (perhaps in my pajamas I'll never say)

Smoking, well, that's my biggest downfall.

well I like the info, what I was really looking for was a survey like David does for the voting.  Then you see we could find out where we are, individually, away from the norm and adjust ourselves, thus instantly creating improved poems, obvious aint it?

Smoking so far appears to be the unifying factor, but not sure on sample size right now, and if we go with Davids method we gonna have to learn to smoke while sleeping which sounds like a fire hazard.

I am gonna give the cheesecake a try.

Hi Hannah,

Well, you've managed to draw a couple of us out to share our poetry secrets. I, like you, am "ambidextrous", if by that you mean using both an iMac and a pc. 99% of my writing is done on them, with an occasional note scrawled on whatever is handy.

I imagine you're only kidding about us wanting to adjust ourselves to the norm, since poets are noted for not wanting to adjust.

As for a common unifying factor, I would guess that warding off impending insanity by getting thoughts down on paper (or on a computer) before they drive you bonkers, would have to rate pretty high on the list.

Smoking, gave it up thirty years ago. Drinking, gave that up too except when it occasional tracks me down and forces itself on me. Cheesecake? Occasional use only.

Thanks for asking.

Wink
